the night when Lucca is illuminated by candles
On the night of September 13Lucca is living one of his most exciting moments and cherished by the local population: the Luminara of Santa Croce.
The city by candlelight.
During this night, the streetlights in the historic center are turned off. The facades of palaces, house windows, and monuments along the procession route are decorated with thousands of small candles (lumini).
The origin and procession of the Volto Santo.
The celebration dates back to centuries of religious and civil tradition in honor of the Volto Santo, a wooden crucifix from Lebanon revered in the Cathedral of San Martino. The procession departs from the Basilica of San Frediano and winds through the medieval streets to the Cathedral.
The cultural environment
In addition to the solemn procession with historical costumes and medieval guilds, the evening concludes with musical performances, choral singing inside the cathedral, and fireworks on the city walls.
